At Humphrey’s we are often asked a whole host of questions about CBD, but one of the most common questions we hear is, what’s the difference between full spectrum CBD and CBD isolate?
As Cannabidiol becomes ever more popular due to its perceived natural abilities to assist with conditions such as chronic pain and depression, it’s important to understand exactly what you’re getting from CBD oil and CBD infused products.
What is CBD Isolate?
CBD isolate means that the product contains CBD only with other compounds removed. In this case CBD isolate is just Cannabidiol (CBD) extracted from the hemp plant. This means that when the hemp plant is processed and the oils are extracted, all other compounds are removed, leaving the singular compound of CBD.
What is Full Spectrum CBD?
Full spectrum CBD refers to extracts taken from the hemp plant that contain all of the natural compounds from the plant, these include all cannabinoids, as well as terpenes and essential oils. It is believed that when specific cannabinoids are isolated from the extraction it can alter their effectiveness, as the components naturally work together.
What other aspects and compounds can you expect to find in full spectrum CBD that you would not get in CBD Isolate?
As well as CBD (Cannabidiol) a whole range of other cannabinoids can be extracted from the hemp plant during processing, each of these are also thought to have health benefits. Other cannabinoids that can be present in full spectrum CBD products are –
- CBDA (Cannabidiolic acid) – believed to reduce inflammation and swelling
- CBG (Cannabigerol) – believed to promote bone growth and aid with sleep
- CBGA (Cannabigerolic acid) – believed to be a natural pain reliever
- CBC – (Cannabichromene) – believed to promote bone growth and reduce pain
- THCV – (tetrahydrocannabivarin) – believed to reduce seizures
Utilising CBD along with other naturally occurring compounds tends to provide a higher level of relief.
Which is more effective?
Every individual has different needs and different circumstances, all of which would need to be considered and researched before determining which type of CBD would be best suited to their condition. For many years it was believed that utilising isolated CBD would provide users with an increased and more effective dose of CBD, however a study in 2015 from the University of Jerusalem (Overcoming the Bell-Shaped Dose-Response of Cannabidiol by Using Cannabis Extract Enriched in Cannabidiol) tested isolated CBD vs full spectrum extracts. The results of the study concluded that full spectrum, or whole plant extract which contained a high level of CBD as well as other cannabinoids provided a far more effective solution for alleviating pain and inflammation than pure CBD extracts.
